DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish rangers made the country's biggest ever drugs seizure after a naval operation involving warning shots being fired at a Panamanian cargo vessel which had refused to follow instructions, authorities said on Wednesday. The seizure of 2,253 kg (4,967 pounds) of cocaine worth an estimated 157 million euros ($166 million) came after members of the army ranger wing boarded the vessel off the country's southeast coast using ropes dropped from a helicopter in high winds. "I cannot overemphasise the significance of this operation and the disruption that this is going to cause the organised criminal group behind the shipment," he told a press conference. Kelly said the cocaine was partly destined for the Irish market and that the organised crime group comprised a number of different elements across Europe. To the Editor:Re “Anger Rises in Houston Over the State’s Schools Takeover” (news article, Aug. 13):The politically motivated and downright misguided takeover of the Houston Independent School District sets a deplorable example for struggling school districts nationwide. The solution to poorly performing schools should not be to close libraries and force misbehaving students to watch videos in those repurposed spaces. To place them in closed libraries and force them to watch videos of their classes only confirms for those students that they’re troublemakers and that reading lacks value. Superintendent Mike Miles, a former Army ranger “who has no official certification,” is better suited to run an Army base, not schools. His plan to compensate teachers for improved scores on standardized tests is also imprudent, for such tests provide a limited measure of students’ aptitude, are often biased and narrow the scope of classroom instruction.

Charles Barber’s “In the Blood” treats a consequential topic, and contains moments of real insight, drama and humor. Trouble is, Barber opens with several omissions and slights that left me on edge for the balance of the book. Barber begins his story about catastrophic bleeding and the urgent search for a cure, appropriately enough, in the savage battle for Mogadishu in 1993. More glaringly, the Army Rangers described on the raid actually played a supporting role to commandos from Delta Force, which Barber never mentions. Yet I wanted to trust this book, because it tells an important story in vivid, engrossing terms.
